Data Analyst
Pan Macmillan are looking for a curious and commercially minded Data Analyst to join our London-based Analytics team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with data to generate insight, build impactful dashboards, and help stakeholders make data-driven decisions.
If you enjoy storytelling with data, problem-solving, working with different business teams, and using tools like SQL and Tableau to uncover meaningful trends, we’d love to hear from you.
Your team:
You’ll be joining a small but dynamic team, reporting to the Head of Analytics and working alongside a Data Analyst and a Data Engineer – you can expect overlap and collaboration across the roles.
The team provides accurate and timely data to drive decision-making across the business, managing a suite of Tableau reports and a Snowflake database. We are a project team working closely with stakeholders in the commercial, creative, business, and process areas to meet the evolving needs of the company and the publishing industry.
Your role:
Day to day, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining dashboards, answering ad hoc data questions, sharing insight with the business, and working closely with stakeholders to help them to make the most of the rich data available to them. You’ll help the business make better decisions by delivering timely, accurate, and insightful data through dashboards and reports.
To be successful in this role, you’ll need to develop a solid understanding of publishing industry processes, challenges, and data sets – support will be provided, but curiosity and quick learning are key.
This role also involves being a part of project teams and offers the opportunity to develop technical skills, including SQL, Python, pipeline management, and cloud-based data tools, with full support from the team.
Your key responsibilities:
Maintaining, improving, and contributing to our suite of Tableau dashboards and automated solutions
Working with stakeholders to understand reporting needs:
Participating in requirement-gathering and translating into actionable plans
Developing visually appealing and digestible dashboards to encourage self-service and efficiency
Identifying and adding new data sources to support requirements
Using SQL to query and analyse data, with a willingness to upskill where needed
Ensuring the reliability of dashboards and insights by ensuring data is accurate, clean, well structured, and tested
Turning data into insight by identifying trends and presenting findings in a clear, compelling way
Helping the business adopt a data-driven mindset through supporting and training others to self-serve with confidence
Developing technical skills, with opportunities to upskill in Python, Snowflake, and cloud analytics tools
Managing your workload using Asana to ensure timely delivery as part of a project team.
Essential experience, abilities and knowledge you’ll need to succeed:
Hands on experience with data visualization / BI tools to create user-friendly dashboards (e.g. Tableau, Power BI)
Confidence using SQL as part of analytical problem-solving – including interpreting and building complex queries, joining multiple data sources, creating reusable views, and working with relational datasets (T-SQL or Snowflake SQL is a plus, but not essential)
Proficiency with the Microsoft suite, especially Excel (including formulas, functions, pivots, and preferably macros/VBA)
A curious and commercial mindset with a problem-solving approach, able to refine questions and extract stories and meaning from data
Strong communication skills, including the ability to present and interpret data for non-technical audiences
A collaborative approach and willingness to contribute ideas in a small team
Experience with preparing clean data to ensure accurate analysis
Comfortable learning new tools and technologies, with a willingness to develop Python or cloud analytics skills
Excellent attention to detail with a focus on accuracy, relevancy, and quality
Organized and self-motivated, able to manage workload effectively as part of a small team
At least one to three years’ experience working with data in a professional setting – as a Data Analyst or in another relevant analytical or data-focused role.
Desirable skills we’d love you to have:
An interest or experience in publishing, reading, the contemporary book market or the creative industries
Experience with one or more of our technologies (or a willingness to learn): Tableau Desktop, Microsoft SQL Server, Snowflake, Matillion, APIs, DBT, AWS, Python, or other scripting and programming languages
Familiarity with modern data warehousing concepts or pipeline management
Experience applying statistical methods or identifying trends and anomalies in data
Experience with creating and maintaining project and process documentation
Experience with publishing technologies and systems (e.g. Biblio, Vista, Midas, BookScan)
Two or more years’ workplace experience in a commercial industry or department.
