Are you an experienced, consumer-facing, a creative, and commercially minded marketer looking for your next move in publishing? Do you have a passion for great creative advertising, including an eye for design? Are you a positive team player, able to guide and inspire your direct reports to do their best work, while creating and implementing your own standout, sales-driving campaigns for leading brands and debuts?

We have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Marketing to join the Pan Communications Team, covering the Macmillan, Pan, Tor, and Mantle imprints.

You will be working on a broad range of high-profile fiction and non-fiction, from big-budget campaigns for major authors such as Ann Cleeves, David Baldacci, Ken Follett, Kate Mosse, Amanda Owen (The Yorkshire Shepherdess), Lucinda Riley and Louis Theroux among others, through to campaigns for exciting debut fiction voices and major players in sport, politics, and business.

Pan Macmillan prides itself not just on winning industry awards and publishing the bestselling books in the market, but also on the wellbeing and satisfaction of our people. Through record-breaking growth over the last decade, Pan Macmillan has remained small enough to enable a collegiate and friendly feel, whilst big enough to compete at a very high level with the other big publishers in the field. We offer flexible hours, meeting-free periods, and a range of wellness initiatives.

Reporting to the Communications Director, the Head of Marketing role is a key role in the Pan Communications team alongside the Head of Publicity, working closely with other teams across the business from editorial through to design and sales.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and implementing audience-focused, creative, and sales-driving campaigns for a wide range of fiction and non-fiction in close collaboration with the Publicity and Digital teams
  • Inputting to the strategy for Pan titles, from which books we acquire and identifying the audiences for them, through to package design and copy
  • Engaging everyone who works on Pan books with a clear view of our audiences so that we optimise our publishing to reach them
  • Managing and developing three direct reports

The successful candidate will have:

  • A passion for commercial fiction and non-fiction and an understanding of the UK book market
  • Demonstrable experience in leading marketing campaigns to build top ten bestsellers
  • Outstanding copywriting skills and an eye for design
  • Line management experience, able to plan team workload and to develop the team
  • Flawless organizational skills, comfortable in a fast-paced environment and working to multiple deadlines.
  • Collaborative, with strong communication skills.
  • Able to generate fresh thinking and new approaches
  • Budget management experience
  • Experience of working with a media buying agency
